Spencer & Browne: Staffordshire's finest legal minds, at your service.

For more than a century and a half, Spencer & Browne has been a byword for excellence in all aspects of property law, across the Staffordshire region and beyond.

If you require legal advice and support, look no further than Spencer & Browne.

Our history

The firm was founded in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent in 1871 by William Spencer and Artemis Browne, and expanded quickly throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century. Successive members of both the Spencer and Browne families remained partners in the firm until 1993 when Mortimer Spencer, the fifth generation of his family to be a Senior Partner, grew disillusioned with partnership and retrained as a sous chef in a Leicestershire noodle bar.

Nonetheless, Spencer & Browne enjoyed a period of rapid growth during the late 1990s through to the mid-2000s. During a period in which many rival firms were hesitant about the promise of new technologies, we embraced them with open arms and to this day are proudly at the vanguard of technical innovation in the legal sector. Since relocating to our Hanley premises in late 2016, we have introduced the use of an SQL database, a VPN for home working, and Microsoft Excel 2013.

Our expertise

At Spencer & Browne, we have sector-leading technical expertise in every aspect of commercial and residential property law. We advise clients on construction and development, land disputes, purchases and sales, tenancies, dispute resolution and much more. As well as individuals, we also offer legal support to development and construction companies and property finance providers.

Having operated for so long in our field, we have come to be recognised not only for the depth and breadth of our expertise, but for our understanding of, and attentiveness to, our clients' individual needs. We're also valued highly for our contributions to the wider legal community. Our lawyers frequently contribute to wider property law discourse, offering insights via their writing in the property press and in nationwide media.
